Whether this is age-driven snobbery I am not sure, but plastic figures were what I played with as a child and since then I have gone on to better things. Hmmm. In my earlier post about Partizan last year, I did confess to buying a few boxes of ACW Perry plastics in a moment of weakness following a beautiful display game that I saw there. And I must admit I was pleasantly surprised. I didn't however think that they would make their way into the holy of holies: Napoleonic. Wrong again. Having been working hard on my Napoleonic French army for a few months now (more to follow), I decided to try out the Perry French chasseurs a cheval box. Quite a revelation.

So, for and against. Negatives first - they are quite light and you feel that a mis-judged sneeze could send a whole regiment flying in an uncontrolled charge across the table! That said, a Really Useful Box with half a dozen regiments inside is a damn sight easier to move around than the metal equivalent. I also worry about the weapons, although they do seem a lot more robust than I would have expected. Even so, the first two regiments have the sword shouldered, apart from the officers, just in case! The case for the defence is pretty solid; they are relatively cheap, very nicely designed (as one might expect from the Perrys) and are easy to convert, quite apart from the incredible variety that you already get in each box.

Below are a few photos of my first two completed light cavalry regiments: the 4th Chasseurs and the 12th Hussars. Such is the detail and ingenuity of this particular box, that you can not only assemble units of chasseurs in a variety of dress, but you can also make them up as hussars in the Kinski coat - a simple and practical alternative to the dolman and pelisse that we normally associate with that arm. A really nice alternative.

You get 14 figures in a box (my regiments are usually in 12s); so by getting five boxes and an additional 2 figure command sprue, you can get 6 full regiments (I am going to do 2 hussars and 4 chasseurs). Not only that, but by judicious use of all the spares in each box, you can easily make up another regiment's worth of riders and then buy spare horses and another command sprue and make up a 7th regiment (in my case a regiment of Neapolitan chasseurs a cheval, which fought in the 1813 campaign). No true born Yorkshireman can ignore economies like that!

The three photos above give a good indication of the campaign variety that you can build in to your units, with the odd rolled manteau and forage cap to break thing up. Yes, I think I am. I will certainly complete all the regiments I mentioned above and am seriously considering a regiment of carabiniers and 4 or 5 of cuirassiers. I do particularly like the Perry metal dragoons in rolled manteau, so I may opt for them, rather than the plastics - not sure yet. I would also be a bit wary of doing lancers as I really wouldn't feel comfortable with plastic lances. That said, they are a really convincing alternative to metal figures and this old dog perhaps can learn a new trick or two.

stevehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00584937164443460779noreply@blogger.com16tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-818269979910352933.post-88707668107290826172024-02-05T13:03:00.000-08:002024-02-05T13:03:02.684-08:00Napoleonic French Army - A New Beginning

Having sold my previous French army to fill the wargaming coffers for future campaigns, I was determined to re-build it as quickly as possible. Question was how? My Russian and Prussian forces were composed of mainly Wargames Foundry infantry, due to my reluctance to "go plastic", whilst most of the cavalry was Perry. Having looked at what was available (and the Christmas 25% sale!!), I decided to go the same way with the French. Although the figures are a little "retro", they are full of character and there is a LOT of choice, with loads of in-pack variations. If you want that scruffy campaign look, it seemed a good way to go.

At the time of writing I have just finished a couple of French line battalions, bringing the total to 8, with an additional 2 light and 4 Italian line, making 14 in total. This Christmas just gone, I took advantage of the annual sale to add a further 4 French line and 2 Italian light battalions (still to be painted). I also bought enough French line artillery to furnish all the batteries I will ever need.

I have also done a couple of regiments of light cavalry to round out phase 1 of the army. These will feature in a later post.

Here are a few photos of the infantry. They are organised in "battalions" of 24 this time - I just couldn't face painting a load of 36s again!! I am intending to cobble together a quick play set of Napoleonic rules which will allow us to play medium sized games (20 units a side) in an evening and larger games (35-40 units a side) in a day. A unit of infantry will represent around 1,200 men and a unit of (12) cavalry around 600. The idea is to be able to field up to a couple of infantry corps per side, supported perhaps by a cavalry corps and maybe the odd guard or grenadier division. I will keep the blog updated with my progress (and maybe even the odd after action report!).

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHfKYQ2TgNQGhNIdaMzs3FrXpT1xfloW93JwCsQALmFxByag2I9RhIYvFkrlRm21fHvC2OTQ6IaqNGVerXZn5M6LMnD1aFTMaYFVpKJgp_-wQHLqmtrQwpu55ALAPtdMYWXfGRbS32gOfTSok6E82MkZgHfXjkvc78Wcb3rCkXQ-CQbl6oCX5pBnCUsuk/s2852/20240118_175901.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; The first brigade has four regiments each of five bases with (usually) five figures on each base, so around 100 figures in total. This is comprised of a couple of boxes of Perry plastics and two metal command packs, which coincidentally comes to 100 figures! Each command pack has two standard bearers, officers and drummers, providing one of each for two of the four regiments. No wastage.

As a previous plastic-sceptic, I must admit that I am very impressed with these figures. They assemble easily, are in a nice mix of right shoulder shift poses and are more robust than I would have thought. Price wise they are, as you might expect, very competitive.

As I have lots of other projects on the go for 2024, I have decided to use the softly softly approach with this one going forward. I have assembled and undercoated another couple of hundred figures or so and about half of these are already block painted - something I was still able to do during the early days of convalescence. I have divided them into batches of 10 with the same basic colour scheme and started working through them alongside other painting jobs. The uniforms are fairly undemanding and I am finding that for little extra effort I can get through them fairly quickly - so far three batches done in a few weeks. Another seven batches to go and that will be the second brigade done - stay tuned to see if I can keep it up!!

stevehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00584937164443460779noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-818269979910352933.post-84727659603160275322024-01-18T15:16:00.000-08:002024-01-18T15:17:21.376-08:002024 Here We Come!

After an unwanted break due to the accident, I am determined not only to crack on and get some of the figures I have been painting on the table this year, but to try and make more of an effort with the blog. I am surprised (and grateful) that despite a lack of posts on my part, that the number of followers has continued to grow. That demands a bit more effort from yours truly!!

This year I am looking to get my Napoleonics (phase 1) to the point where I can play a decent sized game. My AWI collection has also grown quite a bit (more to follow). We have also settled on a quick, easy and enjoyable set of rules: Little Wars TV's "Live Free or Die" - we may tweak them a bit as wargamers do - but they seem to tick the boxes for us.

I also need to crack on with my WW2 stuff. "The Road to Berlin" card driven rules have been in hibernation for a while, although I am still playing about with them from time to time.

I am also hoping to do another scenario book this year - back to WW2 this time.

Phase 1 of the big terrain build is nearing completion, so at least we have a decent table to play on, but there is still plenty more to do on that front too.

I would also like to squeeze in WW1 as well if I can find the time (see below).

Having been a big fan of Lardy rules for many years and having become more interested in WW1 and its possibilities on the wargames table for another, it was with some interest that I came across this publication (actually a PDF), reviewed on Alex Sotheran's Storm of Steel channel on YouTube. It is a compilation of all the articles featured in the annual Lard Special between 2004 and 2015. It is an absolute mine of inspiration, information and wargaming goodness which I have read with great enjoyment.

As well as a good number of scenarios for "Through the Mud and the Blood" and "If the Lord Spares Us", there is a wealth of articles on many other topics. If you have even a passing interest in the First World War this is a great read and an absolute steal for a tenner.

Play the Game, A Great War Compendium – TooFatLardies

As if I didn't have enough to do, I am slowly collecting the figures for a 1916-18 British and German force. I am also planning on doing a dozen or so terrain boards with a trench system and other useful features. Again more to follow.

Well, at least I haven't bitten off more than I can chew for 2024!!
stevehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00584937164443460779noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-818269979910352933.post-84941842934422129412023-10-13T13:30:00.000-07:002023-10-13T13:30:13.354-07:00Arrived at Last

Well, it has taken a while, but my book on the mitrailleuse in 1870 is finally back from the printers. It is essentially finished, apart from some final proof reading and would have been out by now. Unfortunately I went for a walk in my local park on 15 July and got run down by a group of idiots on scramble bikes, who didn't see me until it was too late. Result was a broken elbow, pelvis (ouch!!) and 6 ribs. Only just back home following a couple of weeks in hospital and another couple in rehab. A poor excuse I know, but there we are. Am starting to recover and should be able to get it finished and off to the printers shortly.

Anyway, that's it really, thought I had better explain the delay. Although it will be a while, I think, before I am fully fighting fit again, I realised just how bloody wonderful wargaming is. It has kept me completely positive throughout this whole saga and I can't wait to get back to it again!

stevehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00584937164443460779noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-818269979910352933.post-89316544674065269122023-06-21T13:40:00.000-07:002023-06-21T13:40:29.919-07:00NEW BOOK

Regular readers of this blog will know that I can take my own sweet time in updating it with new material. Compared to the 15 years+ it has taken to get this project over the line, that seems pretty efficient.

I must have started this at least 15 years ago and got it 90% finished. It then lay on the shelf whilst other things got in the way. I have finally managed to get it done and I must admit I am quite pleased with it. This is the first in what will hopefully be a series of short monographs on aspects of the Franco-Prussian War that interest me.

The mitrailleuse is one of those subjects that is often talked about in relation to the battles of 1870, but in truth is little understood. Michael Howard's dismissive comments on its role and usefulness have been uncritically echoed by most subsequent English language writers and I am pleased to make a start in adding a little balance to the debate.

The book traces the development of the weapon before moving on to examine its technical characteristics and its tactical use on the battlefield. It will I hope, convince people that it was not a largely useless curiosity, but an imaginative and, for the time, remarkably well engineered piece of military technology. It had its shortcomings to be sure, but is deserving of a long-overdue reappraisal.

It is currently receiving its final proof reading before heading off to the printers. Having several periods competing for painting time and a load of terrain boards and drop on features to make, the last thing I needed was another "bright idea" to complicate my wargaming life even further. Unfortunately I made my usual (and indispensable) visit to the Partizan wargames show, held on 21 May.

As usual, it was a great day out, packed full of excellent games and a chance to chat with lots of people I don't see at any other time. The high point was a superb ACW game put on by Dave Andrews, David Imrie and friends (the bayonets) and that is where the trouble began. I spent much of the day coming back to watch the game unfold and had a great chat with the guys putting it on. One of them gave me a copy of their handout, which included a link to a free set of ACW rules, written by a chap in the US

Jay's Wargaming Madness (jayswargamingmadness.blogspot.com)

If you are not familiar with this guys blog, it is well worth a look.

Anyway as a Yorkshireman anything that is free gets my attention and when I got home I ran off a copy of the rules - big mistake! I had watched them in use during the game and they looked to be a lot of fun and quite fast moving. When I read them through I couldn't resist doing the one thing I really shouldn't have - I ordered a couple of boxes of Perry Plastic Confederates and two metal command packs (enough figures for a brigade of 4 regiments) and set to work on yet another fairly large project.

I am trying to get AWI, Napoleonic and WW2 on the move and already have longer term plans for the Italian and Seven Years Wars and the prospect of buying and painting another 800+ figures for something entirely different is just too silly - what can I say!

In my defence, here are a few photos of the game that started it all - hopefully it offers some mitigation. If I can also get my arse in gear and start posting on my own blog a bit more regularly, that would also be a good step forward. Firstly a quick apology: I have sent out all the inland copies but the chap behind the counter at the Post Office clearly didn't have English as his first language because despite asking for 1st Class postage "for everything" after the first 7 had been processed he said - "you did say 2nd Class didn't you?" Being English I said no, I wanted 1st Class, but not to worry (that wasn't what I was really thinking!). So a few of you will be getting your copies a day or two late - sorry about that!

Here are a few photos that you might enjoy, whilst waiting for it to arrive - these are my pre-production shots, but you get the general idea.

If you would like to order a copy for immediate despatch PAYPAL is probably the best way to go. I took the title from Peter Gilder's articles in Miniature Wargames 4 and 5 (all the way back in 1983!) and it is, I suppose, a kind of homage to him and everything he did for the hobby.

The book itself is very similar in style to my Seelow Heights volume, with a dozen scenarios featuring attractively drawn maps and detailed orders of battle. There is a little background information as well, although I have cut this back compared to Seelow as it is very easy to find detailed material on this battle from such authors as Nafziger and Hofschroer amongst others. I have also included a large number of colour photos of troops in action; below are three of the working snaps I took, prior to having the actual shots taken by a professional who knows what he is doing! I must admit they look pretty nice.

Publication should be around the end of November.

I will let everyone know when it is available, mainly on various Facebook pages and wargaming forums or you can keep checking back on this blog for the latest updates.

stevehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00584937164443460779noreply@blogger.com12tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-818269979910352933.post-27781597102306165432022-07-21T10:43:00.001-07:002022-07-24T15:49:36.382-07:00Back to AWI

Another great find on Youtube was a channel run by a group of North American wargamers called Little Wars TV: Little Wars TV - Home If you are not familiar with it, I suggest you check it out - it is a surprisingly professional set up. One of the things they have done is take the old (and excellent) set of AWI rules: Loose Files and American Scramble by Andy Callan and add a few bits and twists of their own. The result is a set of rules called Live Free or Die, which give a great game. There is also a scenario pack available and several free scenarios also feature on their website. Our regular group has played them a few times and really enjoyed them. Two of their main virtues is that they are short (4 pages) and simple, but seem to cover all the bases pretty well. The games move at a great pace and the rules have really re-ignited my interest in this period, which had stalled a bit of late.

That said, I thought I would show some of the units I have painted up since my last AWI post - which was nearly 3 years ago!

First up is my interpretation of Lee's Legion (only done the infantry so far). This was a high class unit, led by "Light Horse" Harry Lee, which distinguished itself in numerous engagements. They are based in pairs, rather than 4s so they can deploy in skirmish order if desired. At 20 figures, it is somewhat over-strength, but much smaller and it becomes a bit fragile in action.

Next is only my second unit of continentals: the 1st Maryland, to go with the 2nd Maryland that I painted some while back. At 36 figures, this gives me a very nice Maryland brigade to serve as a core for my American army. The flag is another Mark Allen hand painted job (as are all the the banners for this collection). I have portrayed most of them in the light infantry cap as per the Blandford illustration, although it probably isn't that accurate. As with my other American units, I have mixed up the headgear and dress to same extent to make them a little less uniform. Some units will get this treatment more than others, but I wanted my Maryland brigade to be a bit smarter, as befits the elite of the army.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; It really is a great show with the usual selection of first class games on display. Top of the list for me was the marvellous game put on by friends of the late Ian Smith; the game he was intending to showcase himself but for his untimely death. It was a fitting tribute. Here are a few photos of the game - enjoy!

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmmCHoKoHXL86ocXLSjdprNAVvrk2JZzAAuOhkkd7Cnwn0KHY3au3cLGxY0CJw5FCNcpt9hAdRSwugWN8khBQcr4dzJdtDJ5Hut5BAxevuAoRtl3_ySCdTuFNSrPAwU6iShCIwwm92JSxCfn8d1Fjx-c4OD-yuqpYt3EnJFdtsv7aAjfHjsxEmtluE/s4096/20220522_103911.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; It was taken back in 1990 (yes really) and shows the participants in the 175th anniversary re-fight of Waterloo. Amongst many other things it was Peter Gilder's last wargame; as you might be able to make out, he was in a wheelchair and in the final stages of the disease that would ultimately and before much longer, kill him. He was, I remember, unable to move very much and could certainly not shuffle the vast numbers of figures involved around the equally enormous table. But in the closing stages of the battle as his Imperial Guard cavalry and my British lights fought a series of swirling melees, his delight in the hobby was clear to see.

That's me, back row, right - hair has a bit more grey in it now! The theme of this photo might be: people who run wargames holiday venues - centre rear is Mike Ingham, who took over from Peter, also alas no longer with us. Between Mike and I is Richard Harris, now running Legendary Wargames in Yorkshire - a fantastic set up I have visited several times, whilst rear left is Mark Freeth, owner of the Wargames Holiday Centre in Basingstoke! Doug Mason is centre front in a rather fetching hussar getup.

I am hoping to release another scenario book in the next few months - this time on the battle of Leipzig. It is provisionally entitled "Let's Fight Leipzig"!! A reference and intended homage to Peter and everything he did for Napoleonic wargaming in particular and wargaming/painting/figure design in general. I must admit I got a bit of a surprise when I saw this photo after more than 30 years!

stevehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00584937164443460779noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-818269979910352933.post-85928748403117545592022-01-29T06:57:00.000-08:002022-01-29T06:57:12.786-08:00A New Publication

First of all, a belated Happy New Year! I hope the recent unpleasantness can be put behind us, to some extent at least, in 2022 and that we can get back to regular shows and gaming. Managed to get to Partizan last October - the first show in nearly 2 years, and it was great; lots of beautiful games and a day spent chatting!

One reason for the lack of posts over the last few months has been not only the Seelow Heights book, which kept me pretty busy, but my most recent effort:

As some of you may know, the Franco-Prussian War has always been my main historical interest, although I don't game it (strange that!). A while back I was contacted by Dave Ryan of Caliver Books to ask if I could write the text for the second of Bob Marrion's uniform guides to the Franco-Prussian War. The first volume was published back in 2008 and Bob did over 40 colour plates for the second volume on the French Army, but sadly died before completing the job.

Whilst it was a lot of work, it was worth it and I am pleased with the results. It is absolutely no excuse for my lack of activity on this blog in 2021 though. I don't really know why, but I just didn't feel like I wanted to post anything. Hopefully I can make up for it in 2022. It isn't as though I have been idle on the painting/modelling front - have done hundreds of figures: Napoleonic, AWI,WWII as well as terrain pieces. I am even going really retro and getting into 6mm again!

Anyway I will try and update a little more regularly this year and share what I have been up to.
stevehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00584937164443460779noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-818269979910352933.post-26737363909334050292021-06-30T09:34:00.001-07:002021-06-30T09:34:38.589-07:00You Can't beat the Dice!!

It's something all wargamers have said at one time or another - "it was all going so well but the dice deserted me". The game itself was a great success, with the Soviets finally overpowering the German defenders late in the day. For some reason, interest in this operation stayed with me and finally resulted in the writing of this wargamer's guide. Now it is out there, I thought that a few notes on its design and the scenarios might be of interest to those of you that have been kind enough to purchase it and to those who may in the future.

Although Rapid Fire has been used by our group ever since they first came out, followers of this blog will know that I am developing a set of rules of my own: "Road to Berlin". These are card driven and very different to RF, but have played well in testing so far and everyone seems to enjoy them. However I decided to express the Orders of Battle in RF terms as these are our "go to" set and I couldn't see any reason not to. That said, the scenarios lend themselves very well to many other regimental level (and above) sets such as Blitzkrieg Commander, Korps Commander and Command Decision to name but three; all that is needed are a few tweaks to fit in with the specifics of your chosen rule set.

First of all, the Special Rules. To give any operation an appropriate "feel", you need special rules to reflect those little details that make an operation unique. I also wanted to amend/expand some of the existing rules to (in my view) better reflect the troops and weapons concerned. So I thought I would take each one in turn and briefly explain the thinking behind it.

German 88mm/L56. Upgraded to a Class 1 gun. The Tiger in RF seems little more than an up-armoured Panzer IV - same gun class and slower. Better armour true, but not the terror weapon many allied soldiers saw it as. For the flak gun it can be left as a Class 2 weapon in the hands of Luftwaffe crews inexperienced in engaging ground targets, but Class 1 otherwise.

T34/85. Armour downgraded to C (I believe this has now been done by Colin and Richard in RFR) and enhanced range removed. Soviet optics were notably inferior to those used by the Germans and it seems unreasonable to allow it to outrange the Panzer IV and enjoy range parity with Tigers I and II or Panthers.

Soviet Heavies. These are powerful bits of kit but suffered from low ammo storage and slow rates of fire. Seemed reasonable to limit their ammo to 4 or 5 shots per game.

Panzerfausts. Of all the additional/special rules, this is the one that seems to have resonated with readers the most. By only allowing one Panzerfaust per company, even late war Germans get one shot and are then essentially defenceless against armour. My amendment is easy to use, requires no record keeping and makes German infantry a much more serious proposition where enemy armour is concerned.

Troop Quality. In Rapid Fire, this tends to be reflected simply in a modest uplift or downshift in firing and morale. Making militia units more vulnerable to fire by adding to the firer's effects dice seemed an appropriately simple way of addressing the issue. The main element however was how to represent the greater tactical finesse of German panzer units without affecting playability. The way I chose to do it is above all simple; every time a German vehicle is hit, roll a d6: on a 1-3, you apply the effects as normal, on a 4-5, reduce them by 1 level (eg: knocked out becomes heavy damage) and on a 6, ignore the effects altogether. Because RFR reloaded has changed the way attacks on armoured vehicles are conducted, this is modified to a -1 on the effects dice at short and medium ranges only.

So what is the thinking behind this? Well throughout my reading on this operation, one thing came up again and again: the ability of quite small numbers of German tanks and assault guns to inflict serious damage on much larger formations of Soviet armour. What I wanted to do was to give the Germans a built in "tactical advantage" that would allow them a kind of "get out of jail free" card in the form of reducing the effect of Soviet fire on them. It doesn't confer invulnerablity, just a kind of saving throw to reflect their greater tactical agility and awareness.

Combined with the "hit and run" rule, which allows some German vehicles in certain circumstances to move and/or fire during the Soviet move in addition to their own, German panzer and panzerjager units have more hitting power and survivabilty.

German Kampfgruppen. This rule simply allows the German player to organise his infantry units in a more mission based way, rather than me laying down the internal organisation of each battalion. So, for example a battalion with 30 figures in it can be organised into company groups of varying sizes and composition according to what the player hopes to achieve, with support weapons attached (or not) as he sees fit. Again a simple enough idea that reflects German tactical flexibility without additional complexity.

Field Defences. Being in hard cover, whilst helpful, doesn't offer that much protection in Rapid Fire (although RFR does attempt to address the horrible vulnerability of infantry). This rule makes it harder to kill German infantry in prepared defensive positions (rather that just hard cover) and obliges attacking Soviets to get stuck in, rather than stand off and simply shoot them out.

Panzerjager Platoons. Although this variant only appears in the final scenario, it has wider applications in late war games. Essentially special platoons, heavily armed with A/T weapons are more willing to and effective at tackling enemy armour. It could be used for example with the A/T companies in many Volksgrenadier regiments, which are armed with Panzerschrecks or the Fallschirmjager platoons that shot up the leading elements of the Irish Guards during the breakout from Joe's Bridge at the start of Market Garden.

Forwards. This is probably the rule that would and should be used most in the Seelow Heights scenarios. Simply put, the attacking Soviet infantry can exchange speed for vulnerability by adding the score of 1 average die to their normal 6" movement but at the cost of surrendering the ability to fire and the Germans getting firing bonuses against them. In the scenarios I have tried to apply time pressure to the Soviets in achieving their victory conditions. This reflects Zhukov's obsession with breaking through quickly and getting to Berlin first, regardless of casualties. This rule can increase the rate of advance of the Soviet infantry by some 50-60%, but if caught in heavy fire, it can prove expensive. It is a useful tactical option, but one to be used carefully.

Soviet Artillery. This was an attempt to reflect the advantages and shortcomings of the inflexible but massive bombardments that were a feature of the Eastern Front. In many of the scenarios, the Soviets cannot control their artillery through observers, rather they must pre-plan their fire before the game starts, sometimes with a secondary bombardment well into the game. This is obviously inflexible. To reflect the power of these bombardments, the Soviets can "double up" their firepower, whereby if 2 artillery units (typically battalions) target the same area, German units under the template can be suppressed, removing their ability to move and, more importantly, to fire. Properly planned this can suppress the German defenders at the critical point, but timing is everything.

The principle behind all of these amendments was first and foremost simplicity; it was also an attempt to reflect in a generalised and wargame-able way, some of the features of the Seelow Heights operation on the table.

One gentleman that bought the book (Hi Darren) played out one of the scenarios and it looked like a great game. One of his local rules seems to be to use bases representing entire companies with around 3 figures on them and tracking casualties using small dice in a hole on the base itself. This is an excellent idea. At a stroke you can double or treble the playing resources you have in terms of infantry figures. One of the main problems I wrestled with during the writing of the book was the sheer scale of the operation. Many of the games do feature a couple of Soviet infantry regiments (admittedly pared down), this would make it much easier to manage with a smaller collection, although I do offer some suggestions on "bathtubbing" or scaling down the games if you need to. Check out the game, it is an interesting read:

Warfare in the Age of Cynics and Amateurs: The Seelow Heights - More Rapid Fire Reloaded

Hopefully this brief overview has given an insight into some of the special rules and the thinking behind them. Other than the lack of shows and wargaming opportunities, the hobby seems to have continued with some vigour. I suppose unlike many team sports, we can all bury ourselves away in various projects, waiting for the day we can get it all back on the table and enjoying it again. Obviously the Seelow Heights book has taken up a lot of my time, but I haven't been idle on other fronts, with more AWI and Napoleonic units added, which I will post on next year. I have also been busy with new terrain features, again more anon.

All Seelow Heights orders received to date have been posted, will get any others off after the holidays. Once again, many thanks to everyone that has bought a copy. Simon's Soldiers in Australia will be carrying the book "Down Under"; the first consignment is on its way. Dave Ryan at Caliver Books will also be stocking it.

Another thing I am hoping to do early next year is to post a series of notes on the Seelow Heights book, outlining some of the thinking behind the various scenarios and special rules.

Well, that is it for 2020. Let's hope for better in the coming year. Take care and best wishes.

Steve
stevehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00584937164443460779noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-818269979910352933.post-379442419708116852020-12-15T15:26:00.001-08:002020-12-15T15:27:21.583-08:00Arrived at Last.

Well they did arrive more or less on time - 200 shiny new copies. It now appears that due to Christmas or Covid or Brexit, or possibly a combination of all 3, they will now arrive on Tuesday afternoon. Sorry about that. For those of you who have pre-ordered it shouldn't matter as sending by 1st Class signed for seems to get them through to people (in the UK at least) in a couple of days, so you should have them well before Christmas - another hostage to fortune? Let's hope not.

Should you wish to pre-order, I will get it in the post within 1 day of the books arriving.

Thank you to all those of you that have bought a copy - it is much appreciated. I will post again once the books have arrived.

Best wishes

Steve
stevehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00584937164443460779noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-818269979910352933.post-34140898614915611962020-12-07T13:10:00.000-08:002020-12-07T13:10:29.046-08:00The Seelow Heights: Preview Copies.

Well here it is (at last!) It has been a long haul, but worth it, now it is finally done. Never having used this particular printer before, I ordered 20 pre-production copies just in case. I needn't have worried, they have done a good job. I have now ordered another 200, which should be here by Friday 10 December. This means that I can get them out in time for Christmas (a few people have asked). If you would like a copy delivered by Santa, I can take advanced orders now; that way, I can write up the envelopes and, as soon as they arrive, pop them in the post. Otherwise, I will post again when the reinforcements arrive.

Cost is £18.50 + £4.00 1st Class (Signed For) Postage and Packing for inland customers. Hopefully it gives a clearer idea of the format and general look of the thing. I must admit that the experts I got in to help with the technical stuff have really come up trumps and I am very pleased with the finished article. For the eagle-eyed among you, the captions are still the Latin "blanks" as this page was produced before the actual captions were inserted, although this has now (just) been done.

This is scenario number 10: "Breakthrough at Diedersdorf" and is my favourite. I will give it one final read through and then I think I have done all I can. Hopefully we should be off to the printers in a couple of weeks. If all goes well, Santa should have time to deliver! It has been a long haul, but nearly there now and I must admit, it does look nice.
